Gustave Doré (1832-1883)

Gustave Doré was the most popular and successful19th century French book illustrator. Doré was very prolific and produced some 10,000 lithographic illustrations during his career. Although already well known as an artist by the age of sixteen, he illustrated some twenty editions between 1852 and his death in 1883. He remains widely known for his illustrations of books such as Dante's Inferno (1861), Don Quixote (1862), and the Bible (1866). Doré also illustrated collections of fairy tales, including classics such as "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Sleeping Beauty".

The above portfolio shows four of the over 100 engravings Doré made for his illustrated Bible.
