Kawase Hasui (1883-1957)

Known for his exquisite landscape prints, Kawase Hasui was one of the most prolific and talented shin hanga artists of the early 20th century. He designed around six hundred prints total, mainly for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. In 1956, he was declared a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government.

Among the many themes that characterize Hasui's work, his attention to detail in shadows stands out as particularly distinctive. In the print featured above "Moon over the Ara River at Akabane", one can see the figure of a mother carrying a child on her back in the shadow before the fisherman's hut.
